The Half Day option is a great introduction to Institute for the very young student. It is available for children who are 3-6 years old on the day that Institute begins. If they are past Aunt Rhody in Book 1, you may wish to place them in Full Day Institute even if they are young. This should be discussed with your teacher.

Class Descriptions

MASTER CLASS provides an individual lesson with a master teacher. There are 3-4 students per class and the class time is shared. Students should come prepared to present a polished piece during the first class. When it is not their turn, they will observe the other student lessons. Parents are expected to attend this class with their student to take notes, observe, and help their student prepare for the next day’s classes.

READING/REPERTOIRE/TECHNIQUE in this group class, your child will have an opportunity to review the music they have learned. Depending on the instrument, they will also work on technique (strings/flute) and/or reading (piano/flute). Plan to be here and observe.

ENRICHMENT - Each participant also chooses one enrichment class. This is an opportunity to have fun and enrich the Institute experience. Children should wear comfortable shoes and clothing so they can move freely. Your child can choose Arts & Crafts, Dance or Music Mind Games. For a complete class descriptions, visit our Enrichment page.

Schedule

Monday: Sign-In begins at 12:00pm. At this time, you will receive your t-shirt (included in the cost of registration), your schedule, and all the information you will need to have an AWESOME week at Institute. Orientation begins at 1:00pm in the Jewett Auditorium. ALL students and parents should attend this meeting. Information pertaining to the week’s activities will be finalized here. Half Day students who added optional enrichments will have an afternoon class.

Tuesday-Thursday: Students have classes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We will break for lunch and recitals will be held after lunch. If you wish to participate in one of these recitals, audition information can be found on our Honors Recital page. We love to have some of our young students in the beginning of their study perform at these recitals. Everyone enjoys them, so do not be intimidated by the word “audition.” This is a great experience and those who don’t participate, often wish they had when they see the recitals.

Friday: Students have classes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. After lunch, the afternoon the final concerts will be held - times to be announced.

Students are invited to stay through the lunch hour and attend the honor recitals and concerts at 1:15. It is highly recommended that each child attends at least one honor recital. These concerts are inspiring, especially to young students. There are many benefits from seeing where you can be headed musically, even for the very young.

Half-day students should plan to attend orientation on Monday at 1:00pm. This meeting helps students and parents get an overall view of the activities for the week and it is a fun group building experience.

Finally, young children with older siblings may want to register for additional enrichment classes that are suitable for their age. Cost is an additional $40 per class and should be registered and paid for with your registration.

NOTE: Proper dress is required at all concerts, string students wear black pants or skirts (knee length or longer) and white tops (no sleeveless, please) with black shoes and socks. Piano and flute: female students perform in all black, male students wear a white shirt and tie with black pants, socks and shoes.
